United Nations Command: Worth More Than a DIME

RMCSD 2024-05 Romeo Dallaire

Lieutenant-General Derek Macaulay, CMM, MSM, CD, Deputy Commander, United Nations Command (UNC), will provide his perspective on this unique US-led, multi-national headquarters, its history, and its role in managing the Korean Armistice. Through this presentation the General will explore UNC's contribution to peace and stability in the Asia Pacific Region as well as Canada’s role in the Pacific. 

LGen Macaulay will be supported in the delivery of his presentation by Ms. Un Hye (Elizabeth) Kim, International Relations Specialist and Language Cultural Assistant to the UNC Deputy Commander. 

Following a 30-minute presentation, the audience is encouraged to challenge and discuss with relevant questions. These will be non-partisan discussions aimed at generating thought-provoking responses allowing all parties to become better informed on security and defence.

Come early and enjoy some relaxed conversation and camaraderie before LGen Macaulay’s presentation. This is the perfect opportunity to connect with fellow RAUSI members and guests, share ideas, and build relationships in a welcoming atmosphere.

According to Department of Defense (DOD) Joint Publication (JP), the instruments of national power are diplomatic, informational, military, and economic. These instruments are commonly referred to by the acronym DIME. Source

About the Presenter

Lieutenant-General Derek Macaulay enrolled in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989 and was commissioned as an armoured officer with Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians). His education includes a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Manitoba, a Master of Defence Studies degree from Royal Military College of Canada, and a Master of Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College.

Lieutenant-General Macaulay assumed duties as the Deputy Commander of United Nations Command at Camp Humphreys in the Republic of Korea in December 2023.

Throughout his career, Lieutenant-General Macaulay had the privilege to serve alongside allies and partners from all service branches and interagency departments.

Lieutenant-General Macaulay's assignments include command and staff appointments at the Troop and Squadron level in Lord Strathcona’s Horse (Royal Canadians); British Columbia Regiment in Vancouver, British Columbia; Land Force Western Area Headquarters in Edmonton, Alberta; Deputy Chief of Defence Staff Group (International) and Canadian Expeditionary Command Headquarters in Ottawa, Ontario; Command of his Regiment (Lord Strathcona's); Chief of Staff of Land Force Western Area; Commander 3rd Canadian Division Support Group; Chief of Staff Canadian Army Strategy; Commander 5th Canadian Division (The Mighty Maroon Machine); Deputy Commander Canadian Army; and most recently, Vice Director of Operations, United States Central Command.

Lieutenant-General Macaulay participated in numerous domestic operations including the British Columbia Fires (2003), Vancouver Winter Olympics (2010), Alberta Floods (2013), and New Brunswick Floods (2018). His operational tours include the United Nations Protection Force in Visoko, Bosnia (1994); North Atlantic Treaty Organization Stabilization Force in Zgon, Bosnia (2000); International Stabilization Assistance Force (2004-2005); and Operation Inherent Resolve (2015-2016) as Chief of Staff of the United States of America-led Coalition Joint Force Land Component Command-Iraq (CJFLCC-I).

Lieutenant-General Macaulay is married and is blessed with a wonderful and creative daughter.
