12 August, 2024
Maj Kent Griffiths (Ret'd), Past President, and MGen Paul Bury (Ret'd), Director, were honoured to represent RAUSI at the Peacekeepers' Day Ceremony held on 11 August 2024, in Calgary, AB. The solemn event paid tribute to the courageous men and women who have served in peacekeeping missions around the world, with particular reverence for those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the pursuit of peace. Their participation in the wreath-laying ceremony was a poignant reminder of RAUSI's commitment to honouring the legacy of all who serve in the Canadian Armed Forces.
Every year on the Sunday that falls closest to 9 August the members of the Colonel Donald S. Ethell (Calgary) Chapter of the Canadian Association of Veterans in United Nations Peacekeeping (CAVUNP) honour our fallen Peacekeepers including the “Buffalo Nine”. This was the 50th anniversary of the Buffalo aircraft being shot down over Syria killing all nine Peacekeepers, the largest loss of Peacekeepers’ lives in a single day.
For RAUSI, the Peacekeepers' Day Ceremony is more than a ceremonial obligation; it is a vital part of ensuring the sacrifices of Canadians are never forgotten. Maj Griffiths, MGen Bury, along with the many other RAUSI members in attendance, were privileged to contribute to this important act of remembrance, demonstrating the Institute's collective respect and admiration for the fallen. The presence of these members underscores the deep connection RAUSI maintains with the peacekeeping community and its dedication to preserving the memory of those who have served.
